Replied to survey in April 2011:

" I continue to regard international agreement for the phasing out of nuclear weapons as the best way forward, and I believe Britain can play an important part in that process.

"The issue of electricity generation from nuclear technology seems to me quite separate from issues of military armaments.  I do not support the SNP's position of refusing to consider new nuclear power stations in Scotland, while relying on electricity from nuclear power stations in England to provide baseload power when the wind doesn't blow.  That seems to me to be less than an honest approach."

Trident debate 14 June 2007
Abstained on motion to oppose the renewal of Trident
Views on nuclear weapons:

Voted against an SNP motion and a Lib Dem amendment. Both called on the UK Government not to go ahead at this time with the proposal to replace Trident.

By voting this way he prevented the Parliament from taking a stand against Tony Blair's plan to replace Trident submarines in 2024 and to keep nuclear weapons in Scotland until 2055.
