Replied to a letter from Scotland's for Peace saying that he would vote against the replacement of Trident -

"I was against it even before Nigel Griffiths resigned. It is not just something that we cannot afford but I go back to comments made by Barack Obama during the US elections in 2008. We must show the international community that we lead by the power of our example and not the example of our power. It really isn't a detterant and is there really much point in the world blowing itself up. I appreciate there is a significant number of job involved but I am sure these highly skilled jobs could be redeployed into other industries like renewable energy engineering or nuclear decommissioning etc.

"We can only convince others to disarm if we are willing to do this ourselves. Replacing Trident flies in the face of this.

"True peace comes from the alleviation of poverty and the opportunity trap.

"Great strides have been made on this regard over the last decade or so but there is still a long long journey ahead. I think we are at least heading in the right direction in this journey. Some are further along the road than others but the UK can be rightly proud of leading the world in debt cancellation, levels of aid and the linking of climate change to the poorest in the world."

Also told a hustings meeting - "I don't believe in nuclear weapons. I would vote against replacement of Trident"
